Ryan Robinson uses the analogy of appetizer to suggest that the Eucharist is a foretaste of the Kingdom of God. It need not necessarily fill us completely — lest we mistake the sacrament for the fullness of the coming Kingdom — but it gives us enough of a taste to make us want more. It gets us excited and ready for the coming feast — a feast that all people from all nations will enjoy together.
“The Eucharist (Communion/Lord’s Supper) is an appetizer for the Kingdom. It is a small taste of the Kingdom, this meal where all who choose to partake are invited to do so. It is a radical act of unity in a broken world, particularly on weeks like this one which celebrated Worldwide Communion Day.”
