Rather than talking about donkeys and elephants, perhaps we should be talking about sheep and goats. Brian Zahnd argues that, regardless of one’s political leanings, we should never let the meanness of the political climate replace mercy as our default attitude. The question Jesus poses in Matthew 25:31-46 is not “Will you be conservative or liberal?” but rather “Will you care for the least of these?” Goats overlook the poor, the immigrants, the prisoners, the hungry. They say that these people are unworthy, undeserving, unimportant. But sheep are merciful to these — perhaps because they see their Shepherd in the eyes of the lowly.

“For a follower of Jesus, no loyalty to a political ideology can justify a turn away from mercy and toward meanness.” Choose mercy in the midst of all the meanness.
